442nd Infantry Regiment BAR Gunner Story

Mr. George Morihiro shares his story of service in the 442nd Infantry Regiment, which was a segregated Japanese American unit during World War II, and distinguished themselves as the most decorated unit in the history of the US military. The unit earned more than 18,000 awards, including over 4,000 Purple Hearts and Bronze Stars and 21 Medal of Honor recipients. In 2010, Congress approved the Congressional Gold Medal for the unit. The 442nd fought primarily in the European theatre, primarily the south of France, Italy, and Germany.

Mr. Morihiro was a Browning Automatic Rifle (BAR) machine gunner in the unit. The BAR used 30 -.06′ ammunition and could shoot 550 rounds a minute. Carrying the necessary combat load was tough and Mr. Morihiro shares some secrets on how he did it throughout the war.
