Description

Flying WOLF Hoodie is dedicated to the Warrant Officer Liberation Front (WOLF) in U.S. Army’s Aviation units. It is inspired by my time in Army aviation as a helicopter pilot. As a young Warrant Officer, I first heard about the WOLF (the Warrant Officer Liberation Front) from senior Army aviators. I recall young Lieutenants were not fans of the WOLF.

Officially, the birth date of the Army Warrant Officer Corps is July 1918, when Congress established the Army Mine Planter Service as part of the Coast Artillery. Two years later it was authorized to appoint Warrant Officers in clerical, administrative, and band leading activities. In 1939, Warrant Officers who were qualified as pilots were declared eligible for appointments as air corps lieutenants in the Regular Army. During the Vietnam War, the Army expanded the use of Warrant Officers for flying helicopters. Today, Warrant Officers serve as Instructor Pilots, Maintenance Test Pilots, Safety Officers, and Tactical Operations Officers in aviation units.
