  1. Alexander Hamilton has many interesting facts beyond dying in a duel. For example, Hamilton’s parents did not allow him to attend school and was privately educated. He was orphaned as a boy when his father had abandoned his family and his mother died not long after.
  2. According to the Army Historical Foundation, “Battery D, 1st Battalion, 5th Field Artillery, 1st Infantry Division (Mechanized), traces its lineage to Hamilton’s Revolutionary War artillery company and is the oldest serving unit in the regular army.”
  3. On March 17, 1776, Hamilton was made captain of the group, and under his leadership, it saw action in several key moments, such as including the Battles of White Plains and Princeton. Impressed by the young man’s valor, George Washington made Hamilton an aide-de-camp in 1777.
  4. In 1799, two days before George Washington died he wrote his last letter to Hamilton whom had recently argued that “a regular Military Academy” should be established. In a 1799 letter George Washington told Hamilton such a place would be “of primary importance to this country.”
  5. In 1801, Hamilton established the New York Post; originally known as the New York Evening Post. He created the publication as a megaphone for the anti-Jefferson Federalist Party, which he helped create. In 1976, Rupert Murdoch of News Corps. bought the New York Post for $30.5 million.
